Q&A CPMA exam

In the CPMA it says there are 24 audit cases in the Abstraction section, which lead to 52 questions. But then later on the page it says test takers will have to audit 20 cases? Are the 20 separate from the 24? Is it right to assume the 24 Abstraction cases are just text for you to read then the questions revolve around what you've read? And in addition there will be 20 cases you will have to audit on audit sheets - because it says you can bring any audit tool you want. All the audit tools I've seen are for E/M - is that true or are there also just plain audit tools somewhere online that I can look at?

Hi Anne,

According to the AAPC website there are 40 questions from the case studies. Since the exam is all multiple choice it is all going to be text that you will have to read and abstract. It's just that some of the questions will require you to use an audit tool to help you select the answer. Yes, you can bring the audit tool of your choice or use the ones that AAPC will supply in your exam packet. Not all audit tools are for E/M, there are surgery ones too. E/M is what you will be auditing on the exam so that is the type of audit tool that you will need. AAPC will give you everything you need for the exam with the exception of coding manuals. Hope this answers your questions.
